Fourteen

After they’d finished their lunches, Kayla made a tiny litterbox for the kitty with some litter she’d carried in a bag and a tiny little box she’d saved from an Amazon delivery. As soon as she put it on the bench next to her and set Krypto beside it, he went in and did his business. She had a different baggie for the used litter, and she poured that in after putting him back in his carrier. “You did good, Krypto. What a big boy you are!”

Max was watching her with a silly expression on his face. The man seemed to think she’d lost her mind, but she didn’t care. Her kitten was alive and well, and he was going to stay that way. He was getting stronger every day, and she was certain he was going to live. She just had to make sure he was certain as well.

Kayla strapped the backpack on and stood up. “So what first?”

He shrugged. “I don’t care. I like to do everything.”

“My favorite thing is to go to the stalls where they’re selling stuff and check it all out. And I have to go through the quilts and the 4H displays.”

“I’m not usually interested in shopping, but I could do it just this once.”

“I don’t like to shop a lot either. I just like interesting shopping, if that makes sense.” Kayla watched as he threw their trash away, and then he walked back over to take her hand.

“You need me to wear him for a bit?” Max asked.

“Nah. I’ve got him.” Kayla headed to the left, toward the booths people had set up.

As they shopped, they stopped at each booth, and Kayla touched everything. There was a shop that made beautiful pine boxes, and she stopped and stroked her finger over the face of a kitten. She had to have it.

“How much?” she asked.

Max already had his wallet out and was paying before she even heard the price.

“I was going to get that!” Kayla protested.

“I told you I need to pay when we’re on a date. Just deal with it.”

The older man who was the proprietor smiled. “You like cats?”

While Max rolled his eyes, Kayla turned around so the man could see Krypto through the mesh of the backpack. When she turned back around, the proprietor looked shocked. “That thing is not a cat. It’s a mouse!”

“I assure you, he’s a kitten. His name is Krypto.” She wanted to walk away from him over the insult to her kitty, but she really wanted the box, so she stood quietly while he wrapped it and put it into a bag for her.

“There you go. Good luck with your mouse.” The man laughed a little beneath his breath as he said it.

Max carried the bag in one hand and held her hand with the other. “Don’t let him get to you. Krypto looks a million times better than he did a couple of weeks ago.”

“I guess some people don’t recognize feline beauty when it’s staring them right in the face.
